Bringing Home Smiles……………

When I was told that I am the only person from Jodhpur who is a part of Udaan, I was a little tensed thinking if I would be able to conduct such a thing all by myself, but once I reached home and told my friends about this, they themselves volunteered to help me with such a good cause and complimented the efforts of IIT Guwahati. One of my batch-mate later joined us for the initiative. We organized Udaan on 17th and 18th December at Jodhpur.

We conducted many activities like Origami, Painting competition, showed them science and inspirational videos hoping they would incline towards science and study. We also showed them animated movies and short films which they really enjoyed. We distributed some books and clothes as well which we had collected from our friends and relatives. We made them dance, sing, act and everything they enjoyed.

Conducting Udaan was really an awesome experience. Seeing their cute smiles and spending such a memorable time with them was such a pleasure. Some of them were really talented and looking into their dreamful eyes; I just wished for one thing, “May all their dreams come true.” I never imagined that we could make them so happy that they would anticipate our arrival and wanted us to come back often !!!

Thanks Udaan for giving me this opportunity…………nd i wish to be its part even after passing out from IIT……..

Ever experienced the eternal bliss of small children laughing and sharing some really precious moments of their life wid u?? we were lucky enough to feel it, being a part of UDAAN..we had organized udaan in a pratham study center in Delhi on the 17th of December.

We organized origami for the kids followed by a drawing competition.. One thing that came to our mind was that there is a lot of hidden talent in our country which should be encouraged.. andpratham which is an ngo is doing a great job teaching the underprivileged children and also nurturing their talents..

After doing many other activities with the children we started off with tongue twisters.. nd i think i laughed so hard after a pretty long time.. the innocence of the kids reflected in their behaviour..we ended by taking their hand prints and clicking pictures. i am happy i could be a part of it and hope to organize udaan every year with many other such lovely kids..

Udaan it rightly says giving flights to hope.. :)

SHILLONG DIARIES

January 13, 2012

Friday

Working for your cult-fest has its own ways of surprising (sometimes disambiguated as shocking) you. One day, in the dead of night, you are busy watching the particular soap episode that you waited for a week, and some 4 hours later after leaving the episode midway, you are on your way to the small town capital somewhere in the hills (of which there are so many around here) a hundred kms away, to address a group of college students and coax and mindwash them so much so that they think of Alcher before they think of defecating first thing in the morning. Also, if you are lucky enough, you’ll find it is the coldest day that particular town ever had this winter (and of course, you forgot to bring your jacket) and a secret group of truck drivers have staged accidents all along the highway to give you a chance to enjoy your 80 rupee bus ride to its fullest. Disclaimer : Generally people are not as lucky, and this one account is perhap’s only a Halley’s Comet, and might seem exaggerated. Nevertheless, sitting here in a Mizoram State Transport Bus with frosted windows already, that has been sitting idle in the middle of traffic for the last one and a half hour, a mind enlightened from a day’s blissful experience can only do so much.

I have seen Shillong in passing before. It looked beautiful then, as it looks now. Situated at an altitude of 1496 m above see level, it is the closest you will come to finding a proper town in the hills, I think. Replete with 45 degree roads, churches and made up of many a small hillock, this place also boasts of a lake which is one of the largest in the north east and is famous for scenic spots, shopping and cheap booze. Shillong, I mean. Not the lake. (I am pretty sure, without that latter part about the booze, so many students wouldn’t flock Shillong everytime they have the opportunity.) But all that said, if you are new to the North East, like most of us students are, you’ll like to visit this place and get your new facebook display picture. (Yes. Another one of the sad truths of life. That’s what everyone does when they go to the mountains. The pose in which the pic is taken varies from the narcissist content from one person to another, of course. Some sit with their shades on with the valley stretching away beneath their asses and an expression so solemn Socrates would start believing he never was a thinker, others have this religious belief that their pic should be taken while they are in the air, and keep jumping until the best snap is taken! Its almost become a cult at IITG, the dp-in-the-hills thing. Chances are, once you graduate, and if someone wanted to know if you had been to IITG, they’ll check your display pics on fb. If you have one, you were an IITGian. If you don’t, that degree on your table is forged! Not that it matters, but just to avoid all that fuss, I think I’ll get one dp for me too the next time I am around.)

How a bad day makes you digress!

Anyway, the bus is moving now. It has remained stationary for so long that this moving actually feels weird! And it would be unfair if I didn’t tell you about the good parts of the day. We were here to meet a group of college students, and tell them about our festival, like I mentioned earlier. That went well. Its always good to know people, and not just because a majority of them were good looking girls. We spent the greater part of an hour discussing Alcher, while it hailed on the tin sheds above our heads. (I love this fickle mindedness of the mountains. Sun one moment, rain the other.) They were pretty impressed with what Alcher had done in such a short time. Who wouldn’t be! After we left the college, a starved me had my favourite chicken at a local restaurant overlooking Central Point. We the got onto this bus which will get us to Guwahati at some point tonight. Just a while ago, they had stopped on this dhaba so everyone could have their dinner. I sated my soreness by gorging on a fish dish, the best I have had in ages! Everything in this world will make sense as long as you have good food and a good reason for work. I have the latter in Alcher. I found the former in the fish!

Its been a long day. Save the inconvenience caused in traveling, the work was pretty good. And with Alcher only some three weeks away, everyone’s excited and eager to put in their best for the festival. I think I’ll make the most of this prolonged bus journey and go finish a blog I was supposed to write. But before that, I think I’ll need to take a pee.

This night’s bloody cold!

Udaan-Giving flights to hopes

Udaan turned out a life changing experience for me. I contacted the prayas children home at jahangeerpuri just after I returned to Delhi in December 2011. Prayas children home housed over 161 children from all age groups from 6 to 18. I visited the home and talked to the children, the teachers and the management about myself and my experiences and took a survey of the whole place to take a note of the resources that I had in the home to plan my activities. My parents, my sister, my friend Ishan and my father’s students archit, amar and nipun on behalf of NSS Deshbandhu college helped me in planning the activities for the event of two days 9th and 10th of December 2012.

Finally on 9th of December we went to the home at 9:45 am. The children were having their assembly in the main veranda. We addressed the children about the fun filled day we were about to have. The children were very enthusiastic about the event. Ishan had brought the guitar so we(the chidren and us) decided to sing the song “Hum honge kamyab“ along with the guitar playing. After some time of this chorus singing, one of the small child sitting at the front of the group honestly exclaimed that he would like to sing the song “teri meri” from the bollywood film ‘Bodyguard’. And henceforth a whole group of enthusiastic children came forward to sing the whole song right from the beginning to the end. We all sang the whole song together (the children new all of it). After that we decided to distribute rough papers to all the children present in the compound so that we could all ‘make wonderful objects by the miracle called origami’. The children then let their imaginations fly and constructed different stuff like guns, holster for holding the gun, a fan, houses, an airplane, a bird, swan and many others like a fancy ship. The entire event gave us a message that indeed the imagination of children was unbounded by the rules of man. We then decided to have sum real fun time with the boys. The speakers were arranged in the common TV room. The fun time started here with tunes of oolala, character dheela hai, chammak cchallo etc. The children danced with extreme gusto.

After going for lunch from 12 pm to 1:30 pm, the kids were shown a documentary related to the Universe in which my father explained the same to all the viewers in simple form about the wonders of our universe. This was followed by the viewing of the film KUNG FU PANDA in Hindi. The viewers(all of us present there) enjoyed the movie. Finally we bade the children farewell at around 3:30 pm.

On the second day a painting activity was held in which the students were given drawing sheets, pencils and colours so that they could paint anything they wanted. This gave them an infinite scope to show their imagination. Some students used water colours and some used crayons and sketch pens. All of them came up with wonderful designs and pictures that nothing short of masterpieces. The event got over by 12:30 pm after their handprints were taken on the Alcheringa banner. Some students had also written an essay on the topic of “my dreams” the topic being given to them beforehand. The activities proved that a huge potential lied among the children of our country who if given a chance could use their imagination to bring unimaginable results.

I made many friends in this process including Irfan, a boy of 17 years who is one of the seniors in the home and a sweet boy Nadeem, who is 4 years old.
